Dental Emergency? Here’s 9 Tips To Manage The Pain

    There you are, blissfully snacking on popcorn and watching your favourite movie. Suddenly, crunch, and an immense pain that feels like a nerve has been exposed! That, right there, is a chipped tooth, and whilst it can create an obvious aesthetic change, it can also really hurt.

    This, of course, is an example of many dental emergencies, and one that requires an immediate visit to your emergency dentist. They can help relieve the pain and restore the tooth back to its original form, but what about that pain you’re feeling right now?!

    Well, before you head down to your emergency dentist, try doing any of the following to numb the pain before you can receive treatment:

    Over-the-counter pain relievers

    Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen and paracetamol can provide temporary relief. Before you get to the most reputable dental clinic South Yarra has, try taking one of these medications as directed to help reduce swelling and inflammation. But remember to never exceed the dosage just because you think it might further reduce the pain – this can be highly dangerous.

    Try a numbing gel

    Over-the-counter numbing gels can help relieve discomfort. They use anaesthetic agents that provide temporary relief through numbing the affected area. You must always follow the instructions to ensure you are using it properly.

    Elevate your head

    It is also a good idea to keep your head elevated as this can help reduce pain and swelling. Stack up a few pillows whilst you rest or sleep to help reduce pressure on the sore area.

    Maintain oral hygiene

    Maintaining proper oral hygiene is important at all times but especially so when you’ve hurt your tooth. Be sure to maintain your routine brushing process whilst flossing twice daily, too. This will help clean the affected area and reduce the risk of any infection.

    Use a warm compress

    Warm compresses can work just as well or even better than their cold pack counterparts. Apply a warm compress like a wash cloth or warm towel to the affected area for up to 20 minutes at a time. Check that the press isn’t too hot before applying as it could obviously burn your skin.

    Use an ice pack

    Using an ice pack can numb the pain and reduce the swelling. A great home method is to simply wrap ice cubes in a towel and apply them to the affected area for up to 20 minutes.

    Note: Take a break after 20 minutes as excessive cold on your skin can be damaging.

    Rinse the area with salt water

    Warm salt water can help reduce pain and inflammation. All you have to do is dissolve one teaspoon of salt in warm water before swishing it around your mouth for 30 seconds before spitting the water out. This can be repeated throughout the day.

    Do not eat hard or chewy foods

    If it was hard or chewy foods that created the problem then the last thing you want to do is start eating them again. They will likely hurt the area that they already damaged. This isn’t a “hair of the dog” situation – hard and chewy foods will continue the pain.

    Try clove oil

    This natural remedy can help relieve discomfort and ongoing pain. It contains eugenol, which contains antiseptic and anaesthetic properties. Use small amounts on a cotton ball and place around the affected area for a while. Be sure not to swallow the oil!
